Common traffic safety questions

  • It depends on who manages the road. For roads in unincorporated King County, contact King County Road Services, which handles sign requests and repairs on county roads. For streets inside a city, contact that city’s public works or transportation department. For state highways, contact the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). If a sign is missing or damaged and creates an immediate hazard, such as a downed stop sign, call 911.

  • Traffic enforcement depends on where you are. In unincorporated King County, it’s the King County Sheriff’s Office. Inside a city, contact that city’s police department. On state highways and interstates, it’s the Washington State Patrol. For non-urgent questions, use the agency’s non-emergency line. To report an emergency or a crash, call 911.

  • In Washington, drivers under 18 must complete a state-approved driver training course before getting a license. The Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) lists approved driving schools and has study guides for the knowledge and drive tests. Adult drivers who want to refresh their skills can also take a course through an approved school, and many offer defensive-driving classes.

  • If a driver is putting people in immediate danger, for example driving impaired, recklessly or the wrong way, call 911. Pull over safely first, or have a passenger make the call, and never use your phone while driving. Share the location, direction of travel, vehicle description and license plate if you can see it safely. For ongoing problems, like regular speeding on your street, contact your local police department’s non-emergency line.
